Gamblin produces a range of mediums with no or very low toxicity. Rather than using natural resins such as damar crystals, which must be dissolved using highly toxic solvents (including turpentine), Gamblin has developed a range of mediums unique to the brand based on alkyd resins, including:
The Galkyd Painting Medium, similar to stand oil, which increases fluidity and speeds the drying time of the paint, leaving a glossy finish.
Galkyd Lite is a lower viscosity, low-gloss thinner, equivalent to traditional damar varnish or linseed oil, which allows for a longer working time.
The Galkyd "G" Gel is a transparent impasto gel which holds marks and brushstrokes.
Neo Megilp is a unique medium that decreases viscosity and suspends pigment in a soft gel, creating a Turner-esque luminosity.
And finally, Gamblin's Cold Wax Medium is a soft paste made from white unbleached beeswax that thickens paint and creates a matte finish.
These "Galkyd" synthetic resins are low-toxic, completely odorless, and can be dissolved with Gamsol, a pure 100% odorless mineral spirits, allowing for the thinning, glazing, thickening and manipulability of the paint, whilst maintaining surface flexibility and preventing yellowing and cracking.
